Thanks to contributor #48601942; Grand Island Independent June 24, 2002 WOLBACH -- Carl W. Nielsen, 80, of Wolbach died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the Greeley Care Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Wolbach. The Rev. Ken West will officiate. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Wolbach. Memorials are suggested to donor's choice. Mr. Nielson was born June 27, 1921, to Jens and Bertha (Cassel) Nielsen Sr. on the family farm in Howard County. He attended Howard County rural school and grew up on the family farm. He married Opal Prentice on Oct. 22, 1946, at the Smith Center in Kansas. The couple lived and farmed southeast of Wolbach throughout their married life. Mrs. Nielsen died on Aug. 3, 1983. He married Dorothy Miller Klein at the Nielsen farm home on Sept. 28, 1985. The couple lived on the family farm until 1997 when they moved to Wolbach. Mr. Nielsen was a member of the Wolbach United Methodist Church, the Wolbach Saddle Club and the Spring Saddle Club. His hobbies included bowling, hunting, carpentry and horses. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; a daughter and son-in-law, Lola and Lowell Larsen of Wolbach; two sons; Eugene "Butch" and Judi Nielsen of Alda and Tim and Teresa Nielsen of Rapid City, S.D.; nine stepchildren, including Darlene Rott of Elba, Diann and husband Earl Austin of Archer and Danny Klein of Spalding; sisters, Edna Gay of St. Paul and Martha Bahensky of Palmer; brothers, Bert Nielsen of St. Paul, Jens Nielsen Jr. of Bella Vista, Ark., and Paul Nielsen of Arvada, Colo.; six grandchildren; 36 stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Opal; two grandsons; and sisters, Elsie Wondercheck, Elnora Cook, Evelyn Leeper and Esther Swanson.
