Thanks to contributor #48601942; Grand Island Independent January 29, 2003 PALMER -- Martha C. Bahensky, 86, of Palmer died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Wesleyan Church in Palmer. The Rev. Dan Floyd will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Palmer Funeral Home in Palmer. Mrs. Bahensky was born May 7, 1916, on a farm south of Wolbach to Jens L. and Bertha M. (Cassel) Nielsen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Bahensky. Survivors of the immediate family include two sons and daughters-in-law, James A. and Donna Bahensky of Iowa City, Iowa, and Charles T. and Judith Bahensky of Aurora, Colo.; a sister, Edna Gay of St. Paul; and three brothers, Bert Nielsen of St. Paul, Jens Nielsen Jr. of Rogers, Ark., and Paul Nielsen of Wolbach. ________________________________________ She is also survived by five grandchildren, Ashley, Jacob, Sean, Kendra and Alexander, and two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Austin, and many nieces and nephews. Later her parents moved to a farm northwest of Wolbach and in the spring of 1920, they moved eight miles southeast of Wolbach. She went to District 34 Rock Street School near Rock Creek Cemetery through elementary grades. She then attended Cushing High School for two years, riding a horse three miles and joining a school bus for three more miles. The following two years she worked for her board and room and attended Wolbach High School graduating in 1934. After high school, she worked different short jobs of housework for $3 a week and helped her parents on the farm. She also worked for Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Bahensky where she met Alton Bahensky and married him on Nov. 29, 1936, in Glenwood, Iowa. They lived with Alton's sister, Lillian of Omaha for a short time while Alton was working with Lillian's husband, Jack Fiala. Then they moved back to Palmer and farmed for one year northwest of Palmer across the river. Then they lived with Alton's folk's and farmed. Mrs. Bahensky also worked other places part-time. She worked at the Lemmerman's from 1957 to 1970. They sold their farm in 1967 and moved into Palmer. They then both worked at the Old and New Coolidge Rest Home in Palmer after working for the Lemmerman's. She retired in 1982 to take care of her husband, Alton. Her husband, Alton, died in May 13, 1990. She continued to live in Palmer until she moved to St. Paul for a short time. She was a member of the Wesleyan Church in Palmer, Royal Neighbors, she was very active at the Senior Center in Palmer and the Gage Valley Club. She was also preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, Esther Swanson, Elnora Cook, Elsie Wondercheck, and Evelyn Leeper, a brother, Carl Nielsen, a baby brother and two baby sisters. Memorials are suggested to the Senior Center or the Palmer Rescue Squad.
