Thanks to contributor #48601942; ST. PAUL -- Bert E. Nielsen, 74, of St. Paul died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Thomas Hyde will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery. Mr. Nielsen was cremated. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. Mr. Nielsen was born Feb. 13, 1930, on the family farm near Wolbach to Jens L. and Bertha (Cassel) Nielsen. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Hazel; two sons, Albert of St. Paul and David of Aurora; eight daughters and seven sons-in-law, Shirley and Dale Brown of St. Paul, Janet and Terry Wegner of Wolbach, Carol and Randy Hellwege of Grand Island, Patricia Nelson of Sargent, Sally and Daniel Warrender of Grand Island, Shelia and John Towey of Cedar Rapids, Annette and Rich Cody of Griswold, Iowa, and Jodine and Dave Kuchta of St. Paul; a sister, Edna Gay of St. Paul; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jens J. and Susan Nielsen of Bella Vista, Ark., and Paul and Dee Nielsen of Wolbach. Other survivors include 26 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Bert grew up on a family farm and received his education in a rural school in the Wolbach area. As a young man, he farmed with his family before his marriage. On June 2, 1952, he married Hazel Post at Nysted. The couple first farmed near Wolbach. In 1956, he worked on the laying of a pipeline near Laramie, Wyoming. In 1957, the couple moved to Pierre, S.D., where he worked in the construction of the Oahe Dam. They later returned to Wolbach to farm. In 1973, Bert engaged in trucking along with farming. In 1989, the couple moved to St. Paul and Bert was employed at the Archer Elevator and continued to truck. From 1994 to 2003, he trucked for the Bjorkman Farms near Phillips. He was a member of the Methodist Church, had served on the ASC Committee for Howard County, and had served on the school board at Cushing. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards and being with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren; one brother, Carl; and five sisters, Martha Bahensky, Esther Swanson, Elsie Wondercheck, Elnora Cook and Evelyn Leeper. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
