Selma was the oldest of the 15 children born to Gotthilf/Gottlieb Kalmbach and wife Johanna Buttner. Both her parents were Wendish, and had immigrated as young adults from the Lusatia area near the German/Polish border, then marrying in the Warda area of Fayette County Texas. Selma is bapized at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warda, but by age 16 her parents have moved the family to Theon, Williamson County. Her father runs a hardward store and saloon. By about 1902 she is taking communion at Zion Lutheran Church in Walburg. Selma marries Adolph Domel Sr in 1905. The family story is that she is crouching in her wedding photo, so it will not be apparent that she is taller than her groom. She and Adolph will have 14 children, of which 12 live to adulthood. All the children were born at home, and grew up speaking German and working on the family farm. Three of their sons served in WW1, with son Bert being erroneously reported to the family as killed in a foxhole in France, body unrecoverable as obliterated by a shell explosion. It turned out his men had dug him out of the dirt after the explosion and rushed him to a hospital in Paris, where he had been recovering. But the chain of command had not known of this until after notice of his death was delivered to the family. The Adolph Domel family kept alive the Wendish tradition of Rumplich from the old country, with one son dressing up as Santa Claus and giving gifts to their grandchildren. Selma died of a stroke in a Georgetown hospital.
