Adolph Domel was born in the Cottbus/Schorbus/Spreewitz area of Germany, the fourth of the six children (all sons) born to Johann Dohmel and Marie Schulz. His father died young in a house fire, and in 1891 his widowed mother immigrated with the six boys to central Texas, where her mother and siblings had already arrived. On May 1, 1891 Marie and the six boys took the steamship "Lincoln" from Hamburg, Germany to Grimsby, England (on the eastern coast) where they then traveled overland to Liverpool and sailed on the steamship "Lord Clive" to the Port of Philadelphia. No ship record has been found for the last leg, but it is believed to be by ship from Philadelphia to Galveston, Texas. They first live in the Warda area and attend Holy Cross Lutheran Church. There the mother remarries, to Johann Pobran, and has two more children, both girls. Adolph and most of his brothers move to the Theon/Walburg area in Williamson County, Texas, where three of them become lifelong members of Zion Lutheran Church. On 26 Dec 1905 Adolph married Selma Kalmbach, daughter of Gotthilf/Gotthilf Kalmbach and Maria Buettner. Adolph's brother John later marries Selma's sister Annie Kalmbach. Adolph and Selma had 14 children, of which 12 lived to adulthood. The family lived on their farm near Walburg, TX, just north of Zion Lutheran Church on the east side of County Road 1105 and across the road from Adolph's brother John and family. After the death of her second husband Johann Pobran, Adolph's mother moves to the Walburg area and takes turns living with her sons there. She and Adolph will each live to age 91 and are buried at Zion, where there are 4 generations of the Adolph Domel family buried. ----------------------------- DOMEL, Adolph Henry, Sr. of Walburg.
