Bio

. Melissa was the daughter of Johnnie Jefferson Martin and Hattie Usher Dilley Martin. Her twin Mildred died as a three year old. Melissa was the wife of James Calvert Selby, they had three sons, James Darrell, Willis Laurin (Billy), and Elbert Lamar Selby A granddaughter remembers: She was a very pleasant, happy person, very good-natured and caring. She was generous with everyone. She loved her family, and was religious. Melissa loved to cook and was an excellent cook. She worked for a while in the school lunchroom. She also loved to crochet, quilt and do "handiwork". She loved being around other people, and was very outgoing. Melissa married (at age 19) James Calvert Selby on 19 January 1923. She bore him three sons: James Darrell (Darrell), Willis Laurin (Billy), and Elbert Lamar (Lee). She took great joy in seeing her grandchildren, and was very loving to each one. Her son, Lamar, wrote about the family in his "Growing Up In Phoenix - Mississippi That IS" and gave us great information about the times and lives of those living there. She has granddaughters who are very active in family history research. She was a lifetime member of Fletcher's Chapel Methodist Church.
