Bio

John Martin was the 8th child of William P Martin II and Rebecca Fletcher. He was born in the Phoenix community and lived there all his life. He was the Husband of Sarah "Sallie" Lemenda Smith & Hattie Dilley Martin. He had 4 children with Sallie and after her death marriied her cousin Hattie Dilley. They had 13 more children. JJ Had a total of 17-18 Children. Farmed and kept a small store at Phoenix Community, Yazoo Co. MS Obituary J. J. Martin Dies at Mechanicsburg Wednesday Mar 28 1945 Obit John J Martin, age 82, died at three o'clock Wednesday, Mar. 28, following a short illness. Mr. Martin lived near Mechanicsburg and was one of the better known farmers in this section of the county. The news of his passing is learned with sorrow. Funeral Services were conducted at eleven o'clock from the family home with interment in Phoenix Cemetery. The Rev. Fleet Jones of Satartia officiated and the Stricklin Funeral Home was in charge of burial arrangements. Serving as pallbearers were Herbert and Basil Hilderbrand, Neal Daniels, Vernon Whitaker, Tom Selby and Bert Germany. Surviving besides his wife are his daughters, Mrs. C. C. Herrin, and Mrs. Luther martin of Bentonia, Route 2; Mrs. Ree Hair of Gilmer Tex., Mrs. Jim Selby of Phoenix, and Mrs. J.B. Brown of this city; his sons, Hilton Martin of Anding, Ernest B. and J. D. Martin of the U.S. Navy, Roy Martin of Bentonia, Route 2 and L.W. Martin of Redwood, and a brother E. S. Martin of Vicksburg. Mr. Martin was well liked and highly respected. In his passing, his family has the sympathy of many friends.
