"Besides their own twelve children, which they raised to man and womanhood, they also have raised to man and woomanhood seven grandchildren." LONG TIME RESIDENT OF UMATILLA IS DEAD - Mrs. Mary J. Stephens, aged 87, a resident of the county for 40 years, died yesterday at St. Anthony's hospital, after four weeks of pain which she bore with the patience and fortitude characteristic of her. Mrs. Stephens had been in excellent health until she fell and broke her hip, which ultimately led to her death. Mrs. Stephens, who reared 12 children, exemplified the name of mother, besides being a mother to her own family, she mothered her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Throughout her days she lived a busy self-sacrificing life, and won a host of friends. Mrs. Stephens was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, April 10, 1844 and at the age of 20 she married Alfred Bell Stephens, who survives her. Mr. Stephens is a Civil War veteran and the only surviving veteran in Pendleton, taps having sounded for all other members of Kit Carson Post. The nine living children are Mrs. J. C. Donelson of Marion (Mason?) City, Nebraska; Mrs. Frank Robinson, Sr. of Portland, Mrs. H. J. Newcomb, of Pendleton; Mrs. A. D. Smith of Yakima; Alfred B. Stephens, of Umatilla; Jeff Stephens, of Portland; Thad Stephens, Omer and Hiram Stephens of Pendleton. Children no longer living are Mrs. Josephine McCully, Mrs, Mary Land and Caleb Stephens. There are 22 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. from Folsom Chapel.
