DEATH TAKES J. A. STEPHENS - Jeff A. Stephens, 70, died at this home in Umatilla this morning. Serving as mayor of Umatilla continuously for ten years following his appointment in 1939 when Mayro Tucker died. Stephens retired from the office in1949. He was serving his second term on the five-man rural school board and had been on the Umatilla school board many years. Stephens was born in Seward, Nebr., on the old Stephens homestead Aug 21, 1880. Married his wife Ionia in 1902. To this union was born one daughter Fern in 1903. She preceded her father in death many years ago. A brother Al Stephens lives in Umatilla. Stephens brought his family to Umatilla in 1906. Since that time he has been in the employ of the Union Pacific railroad, and held the position of engineer until his retirement 5 years ago. Folsom Funeral chapel has charge of funeral arrangements to be announced later. (East Oregonian, Pendleton, Umatilla Co., Oregon, 20 Jan 1951, pg 1) STEPHENS FUNERAL - Funeral of jefferson A. Stephens, Umatilla, will be Wednesday, 1 p.m. in the Folsom chapel with Dr. kenneth Nelson, pastor of the Baptist church, officiating. Burial will be in Rose City cemetery, Portland.
