Bio

Mr. Howard E. "Hoddie" Bennett, 75, of 11374 Gehr Road, Waynesboro, PA, died at 7:45 P.M. Sunday, October 26, 2003 in the Waynesboro Hospital. He was in failing health for the past two weeks and critically ill since Saturday, October 25. Born December 9, 1927 in Lemasters, PA, he was the son of the late Henry Howard and Della (Smith) Bennett. He lived his early life in the Lemasters and Mercersburg areas. Mr. Bennett attended school in the Fort Loudon Schools. He was married to Doris R. (Parks) Bennett on October 21, 1976 in Hagerstown, MD. Mrs. Bennett died March 19, 1983. He then married Ruth Jane (Foore) Bennett on October 10, 1985. She died January 7, 1992. Mr. Bennett moved to the present residence in 1994. Mr. Bennett was employed for Martin-Marietta Construction as a heavy equipment operator, and then prior to retiring in 1993 he was a welder at Frick Co., Waynesboro for 16 years. He was a member of the Wm. Max McLaughlin V.F.W. Post 695 and the Waynesboro Fish and Game Association, both of Waynesboro. Mr. Bennett enjoyed hunting and his cat. He is survived by one daughter, Debra S. Divelbiss, Greencastle, PA; five sons, Earl G. "Butch" Bennett, Harold L. "Lee" Bennett both of Waynesboro; Roger L. "Bub" Bennett, Rouzerville, PA; Jerry R. Bennett and Eldon P. "Perry" Bennett both of Greencastle, 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Bertha "Dolly" Myers, Fort Worth, TX, Ruth Butts, Mercersburg, PA, one brother, Harry "Hez" Bennett, Mercersburg and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Barbara A. McCleary, Melda F. Fargus, Mary E. Keefer and Della G. Rockwell, six brothers, Eldon A. Bennett, Chester H. Bennett, John H. Bennett, Wilton H. Bennett, Daniel R. Bennett and Marvin S. Bennett. Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, October 30, 2003 in the Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad Street, Waynesboro with Rev. Joel F. Nogle officiating. Burial will be in the Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
