August 23, 2010, Public Opnion, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania Harry B. "Hez" Bennett, 83, of Mercersburg, passed away at 2:20 PM August 21, 2010 at his home where he was surrounded by his family. Born October 9, 1926 in Lemasters, PA he was a son of the late H. Howard and Della Smith Bennett. Harry was employed at the former Lowengart Co. and the former Fry Stone & Coal Co. both of Mercersburg. For 28 years he worked at Grove-Manitowoc of Shady Grove, PA. Following his retirement from Grove he was a school crossing guard at Mercersburg Elementary School and was a parking and water meter reader for the Boro of Mercersburg. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Church of God of Mercersburg where he was a Sunday school and church song leader. Life member of VFW Post #6241 of Mercersburg and was one of the first coaches at the Mercersburg Little League. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Rockwell Bennett, whom he married December 26, 1946. A daughter, Linda B. Martin of Mercersburg. Grandchildren, Staci (Mrs. Rob) McCulloh, Elizabeth Bennett, Denise (Mrs. Nathan) Bricker, Cristi (Mrs. Mike) Berrios, and Dennis L. "Dewey" Bennett, II. Great grandchildren, Jessica and Nicole McCulloh, Joshua Bennett, Duane Martin, Miguel and Gabriel Berrios, Dolton, Luke, and Noah Bricker. Sisters, Bertha Myers of San Antonio, Texas and Ruth Butts of Mercersburg. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis L. Bennett and 11 brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on August 25, 2010 in First Church of God with Reverend Ernest E. Pletcher and Mr. Andrew Mellott officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Lemasters, PA, with military graveside services by Charles Nitterhouse VFW #1599 Honor Guard. Viewing 6 to 8 PM Tuesday in Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Inc., Mercersburg and one hour prior to the services Wednesday in the church.
