Mrs. Bettie Zapalac, age 94 of Abbott, passed away Thursday morning, December 2, 1999 in West Rest Haven. Rosary was recited 10 a.m. Saturday, December 4, with Mass of Christian Burial following at 10:15 a.m. in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott, with the Rev. Ron Sheible, O.S.A. as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Mrs. Zapalac was born June 1, 1905 in Penelope and had lived in the Abbott area most of her life. She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Altar Society, K.J.Z.T. Society #104 of Abbott, Catholic Daughters of America Court #829 of West and the S.P.J.S.T. Lodge #6 of Cottonwood. She was the last survivor of eight children of Cyril and Antonia Smajstrla. She enjoyed making quilts and had made over 100 quilts. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Vinc Marek, who died June 29, 1925. She married John F. Zapalac on September 5, 1927 in West. He preceded her in death on November 30, 1987. Mrs. Zapalac is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Frances Malaer and her husband, Bruce of Abbott; two grandchildren, Linda Malaer Bole and her husband, Mike and John Malaer and his wife, Angela, all of Houston and 5 great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers were Raymond Marek, Charlie Pavlas, Sam Polansky, Tommy Neill, Mike Bole and Henry Zapalac. Kotch Funeral Home of West was in charge of arrangements.
