John F. Zapalac, 94, of Abbott, died November 30, 1987, at West Community Hospital. Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. December 1 at Kotch Funeral Chapel in West. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Dec. 3 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott, with the Rev. Gary Geurtz as celebrant. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Mr. Zapalac was born July 31, 1893, in West. He lived most of his life in Abbott, Penelope, and West. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott. He was a retired farmer and was a Veteran of World War I. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 4819; he was also the oldest member. He was a member of KD Catholic Workmen and the SPJST Lodge No. 6 in Cottonwood. Survivors include his wife, Bettie Smajstrla Marek Zapalac; a daughter, Frances Malaer of Abbott; a brother, Henry C. Zapalac of West; a sister, Albina Kuchar of Dallas; and two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Henry Zapalac, Jr., Jerry Zapalac, Raymond Marek, Louis Kazda, Charlie Pavlas and Sam Polansky. Honorary pallbearers were members of V.F.W. Post No. 4819 of West.
