Ernest Nemecek, 80, Passes Away Sunday One of West's leading residents and businessmen, Anastaz (Ernest) Nemecek, passed away at 5:25 a.m. Sunday at his home. He was 80 years old at the time of his death. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.J. Polcak at the Church of the Assumption Tuesday at 9 a.m. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rosary was recited Monday evening at the residence. Mr. Nemecek had been ill since January 1953. However, he continued to make periodic visits to Nemecek Brothers Market, which he and his brother, Anton R. Nemecek owned until a month ago when his illness became more serious and confined him to his home. He was born in Frystak, Czechoslovakia, September 2, 1873, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Nemecek. He entered the butcher trade and served his apprenticeship of three years in his native land and Austria. In 1893 he came to the United States, worked briefly in the coal mines of Shenandoah, Pa., then came to Waco in 1894. Following several visits to West and working awhile with Krizan and Pressley butchers in a wooden building on the corner where the State National Bank now stands, he decided to open a market here on the Saturday preceding Easter, 1896. He was assisted by his father, brothers Frank and Rudolph and later, Anton. The meat market has operated continuously in the same location ever since. Mr. Nemecek was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 60 years. He became a 3rd degree member of the Waco council in 1908, a fourth degree member in 1912, and was an organizer, charter member and trustee of the West council established in 1921. He was also a member of Lodge West No. 36, SPJST. He married the former Frances Karlik here in November 1898. She survives him. Survivors include his widow; three sons, John, Raymond, and Eddie Nemecek, all of West; three daughters, Mrs. E.J. Jerabek, Mrs. J.R. Kubala, and Mrs. R.J. Hruska, all of West; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Joe C. Karlik, Albin C. Karlik, Joe Nemecek, Louis Karlik, Anton G. Mazanec, and Joe Karlik.
