Bio

Christine Nemecek Hruska, age 96 of West, passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 7, 2001, at Hillcrest Medical Center at West. A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, by Deacon Buddy Shieldes. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with the Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery. This column is too short, the borders too narrow, to fully tell all Christine did in her 96 years of life, here on earth. She was born November 16, 1904, in West, the daughter of Ernest and Frances Nemecek. Christine lived in West all of her life. She attended grade school at St. Mary's in West and then The Sacred Heart Academy in Waco. She graduated from Incarnate Word Academy in San Antonio in 1925 and on July 17, 1934, she married Raymond J. Hruska in West. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1977, after 42 years of marriage. She and her husband ran Hruska's Grocery, later known as Hruska's Red & White. They worked side by side in the store until Raymond was appointed Postmaster in 1961. At that time, the store was sold, and Christine began doing something she became noted for and that was helping others. She put her heart and soul in volunteering. When the Kiwanis Club wanted to bring the Blood Drive to West, she was the one who signed up all of the volunteers to give of their time so that the Blood Drive would be successful. She became a member of the Hospital Auxiliary in 1967 and began volunteering at the hospital at its inception in 1972. She volunteered at the West Rest Haven, helping with Mass on Friday, Bingo on Monday, and the Once-A-Month birthday party. She was also instrumental in helping to start a fund to raise money for the purchase of ambulances for West. In 1996, Christine was honored for her numerous hours of volunteer work. At that time she had put in 5,719 volunteer hours as a hospital volunteer. When talk began about having a festival in West, Christine backed it 100 percent. She was in charge of the hospitality booth for Westfest from the very beginning in 1976, until she was forced to give that up because of health reasons in 1994, at the age of 90. She was honored by being the grand marshal of the Westfest parade in 1987. Christine was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 54, Catholic Daughters of America Court No. 829, KJZT Society No. 11, KJT No. 31, St. Anne's Altar Society, and St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption. "Mom," as she was known by her family, will always be remembered for her wonderful pecan rolls, her faith in the Catholic Church, her pride in being Czech, her sense of humor, and her willingness to help whenever asked. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Frances Nemecek and a daughter, Margaret Ann Shieldes, who passed away in 1980. She is survived by one daughter, Jeanette Karlik and her husband William of West; a son-in-law, Deacon Buddy Shieldes of West; six grandchildren, Ann Massey and her husband Larry, Mandy Sorenson and her husband Eric, Robby Shieldes, Stephen Shieldes, Michael Colley and his wife Carrie and Carol Colley; three great-grandchildren, Katie, Mark and Elise Massey; one brother, Raymond Nemecek and his wife Lillian; sisters-in-law, Adele Nemecek, Wilma Crippen, and Helen Hruska and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wants to thank Dr. Eisma for the care he gave Christine, the West Rest Haven staff for the wonderful treatment she received while being a resident there and the numerous friends who came to visit her. Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 111, No. 11, Edition 1, Thursday, March 15, 2001, page 5 Contributor: Betty Fajkus Marek (48445083)
