Longtime area businessman dies September 20 in West Edward (Eddie) Nemecek, a former co-owner of Nemecek Brothers Meat Market, died Monday (Sept. 20) in West Community Hospital. Mr. Nemecek, age 78, began working in the family meat market in 1932 and later became co-owner of Nemecek Brothers Meat Market. He retired from the business in 1987. He graduated from West High School in 1933 and also attended Allen Academy in Bryan and Hill Junior College in Hillsboro. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West and was an active member of numerous civic and fraternal organizations in West. Mr. Nemecek also served as a member of the State National Bank in West board of directors. A rosary was recited 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West by Rev. Ed Karasek. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, con-celebrated by Rev. Ed Karasek and Msgr. Emilian Foltyn. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery near West. Mr. Nemecek was born June 12, 1915 in Waco, the son of Ernest and Frances Nemecek. He married Adele A. Smajstrla on June 10, 1940 in West. He began working in 1932 at the family business and later became co-owner of Nemecek Brothers Meat Market in West; he retired in 1987. He was a 1933 graduate of West High School and attended Allen Academy in Bryan and Hill Jr. College in Hillsboro. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2305 where he was active in the council choir, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4819, American Legion Post No. 478, and the S.P.J.S.T. Lodge No. 54, all in West. He was also a former member of the West Volunteer Fire Department and was a past Chief, the City Water Commissioner, the West Longhorn Club, the West Fair and Rodeo Association, and the Texas Bird Breeders Association. He was also a member of the board of directors of the State National Bank in West. Mr. Nemecek served his country with the United States Army Air Corp during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre, and was discharged in 1946 at the rank of sergeant. He is survived by his wife, Adele A. Nemecek of West; two daughters, Sandra O'Connor of Waco and Cindy Hobbs and her husband Bob, of West; one brother, Raymond Nemecek of West; one sister, Christine Hruska of West; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
