Anton Nemecek Of West Dies Anthony Robert Nemecek, 88, of West, died Thursday morning, June 13, in West Community Hospital. Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Friday in the Kotch Funeral Home Chapel in West. Requiem mass was celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, Rev. George Doskocil served as celebrant. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Mr. Nemecek was born June 6, 1888 in Frystak, Czechoslovakia, the youngest son of John and Veronica (Petras) Nemece4k. He was associated with the Nemecek Brothers Meat Market as a partner from an early age, and retired at age 72, in August, 1958. Many knew him as "Mr. Anton" and "Uncle Anton." As a member of the West Band and later, in 1908, he became a member of the Kohut Band, he was known for playing the tuba. He retired in 1940. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption and was a longtime member of the church choir. His bass voice helped make the Latin High Masses so impressive, and at weddings, the "Ave Maria" sung by him, is remembered by many couples. He was a veteran of WWI, serving in the infantry. He was a member of the American Legion and was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, West Council 2305, of which he was a past grand knight. He was also a member of the Msgr. J.J. Kearnes General Assembly 1358 Fourth Degree of Knights of Columbus, SPJST Lodge No. 54 and the KJT Society No. 31. He married Miss Regina Rydel in 1935. She died Jan. 4, 1972. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Ed Mazanec, Sr., Johnny Mazanec, Joe Mazanec, Jr., Raymond Nemecek, Edward Nemecek and Mark Barton.
