Joseph Gerik, Pioneer Citizen of West, Dies Joseph Gerik, age 76, died at his home near West on Monday, July 3rd. He was a pioneer resident, having spent nearly a half-century of his life in this section. He was one of the most prominent citizens of this district. Mr. Gerik was a native of Czechoslovakia, being born in that country on December 14, 1857. At the age of 19, he came to this country to make his home, and has been a resident of the United States for fifty-seven years, forty-five of which was spent in this immediate vicinity. Funeral services were held at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 5th, at the Catholic Church, Rev. Ed. J. Polcak in charge. Interment was at the Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Frank Bezdek, Vinc Urbanovsky, John Cocek, Louis Stepan, John Marak Sr., Alois Karlik. Surviving this venerable citizen are his widow; five daughters, Mrs. L.D. Karlik, Mrs. E.M. Marak, Mrs. Luis Kallus, Mrs. Eugene Cocek, Mrs. George Lednicky; five sons, Joe, Willie, Frank and Vinc, all of West, and Ludvic of Jackson County; two brothers, Frank of West and Vinc of Haskell County; one sister, Mrs. Annie Hillman of Fayetteville.
