Bio

Yoakum - Janie "Johana" Kurtz, age 81, of Yoakum, passed away on Monday, May 17, 2004. She was born in Gonzales County on January 17, 1923, to Richard Vinklarek and Johana Chilek Vinklarek. She was a cafeteria cook for Bloomington Independent School District and a Catholic. She is survived by her daughter, Johana Kurtz of Yoakum; sons, Paul Kurtz of Placedo, Larry Kurtz of Guadalupe, James Kurtz of Point Comfort, and Randy Kurtz of Inez; brothers, Martin Vinklarek of Yoakum, Richard Vinklarek of Shiner, and Frankie Vinklarek of San Antonio; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edwin Kurtz; son, Richard Kurtz; sisters, Cecilia Wenske and Madeline Vinklarek; brothers, Fred Vinklarek, John Vinklarek, and Thomas Vinklarek; and grandson, David Kurtz. A Rosary was held on Wednesday, May 19, at 7:30 p.m. at Buffington Funeral Home. Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 20, at 2 p.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church with Rev. Roger Hawes officiating. Burial followed at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers: Charles Wenske, Eugene Wenske, Doug Ressler, Christopher Kurtz, Jeremy Kurtz, Clifton Vinklarek, Keith Kurtz, and Roger Kurtz. Honorary pallbearers: James Hamilton, Robert Braunhol, and Michael Farmer. Memorials: St. Joseph School Endowment Fund.
