SHARES A HEADSTONE WITH JOHANNA OTELIA "JANIE" VINKLAREK (#43961324), HIS WIFE.
Mr. Edwin Frank Kurtz, 46 years, 1 month, and 22 days, resident of Victoria County for 17 years and an employee of Alcoa's Point Comfort Operations, was found early Sunday morning, August 30, 1970, in the back yard of his home near Placedo with a 22 caliber bullet wound in the head. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a Victoria hospital. A single shot .22 rifle was found near the body by a son. The sheriff's office was notified at 1:48 a.m. on Sunday. Justice of the Peace Alfred C. Bass, who conducted an investigation, ordered an autopsy. Although he had not returned a verdict late Sunday, he said that his investigation had revealed nothing to indicate the death wound was anything other than self-inflicted. The Kurtz home is located approximately a quarter mile from Placedo on FM 616, which links Placedo and Bloomington. The body was found approximately 100 feet from the house. Kurtz was born in Shiner on July 8, 1924, and formerly resided in Yoakum. The son of the late Charlie and Pauline (Hrncirik) Kurtz, he was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Bloomington. He was an Army veteran of World War II. The body remained at Duckett Funeral Home in Victoria until noon on Monday, August 31, at which time it was taken to Buffington Funeral Home in Yoakum, where a rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Yoakum. The body was taken to the church at 9 a.m. Burial was in St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Janie Vinklarek Kurtz; a daughter, Johanna; five sons, Paul, Richard, Larry, James, and Randy Kurtz, all of Placedo; two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Pauline) Berckenhoff of Shiner, and Mrs. Martin (Helen) Vinklarek of Yoakum; a half-sister, Mrs. Alphonse (Elizabeth Havel) Kurtz of Shiner; and a brother, Alfons Kurtz of Denison, Texas. He was preceded in death by his mother on February 28, 1946, and his father on January 9, 1967. Shiner Gazette, Thursday, September 3, 1970.
