Dick Sides Rites Set; Struck By Lightning Bolt Remains of W.H. (Dick) Sides, 52, killed by a lightening [sic] bolt Tuesday afternoon while on a fishing trip in Mexico, were returned here early Thursday. Funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in the Nalley Chapel and burial will be in the City Cemetery. Elder B.R. Howze of the Primitive Baptist Church will officiate. Mr. Sides was victim of a freakish turn of fortune during a violent storm. He had gone to Tiburcious, Mexico in company with James W. (Jay) Johnson of Big Spring, and John Tidwell of Abilene. When the storm struck, rain became so intense and the winds so terrific that the three decided to leave their tent and make a break for the pickup truck. Mr. Sides was the first out, and as he left, a bolt struck him and a nearby tree, knocking the tree on him. Apparently he was killed instantly at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. Streams were so swollen that it was impossible to get word of his death out until the body was removed to Coyame and then flown in a government plane to Olinaga. A funeral hearse was sent from Marfa to return the body, together with his companions to Texas. There a Nalley funeral coach received the remains. Born May 10, 1902, in Smith County, Texas, Mr. Sides came here in 1927 from Childress. He was well-known in this area for his long service as a painter and paperhanger. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Painters, Decorators and Paperhangers Local No. 1431 and of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2937. His membership was in the First Baptist Church at Kirkland. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lillie Opal Sides; one son Wilbur W. Sides, both of Big Spring; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Sides, Kirkland; two brothers, W.F. Sides, Big Spring, and H.C. Sides, Childress; six sisters, Mrs. Luevada Baird Sanger, Mrs. Malissa Thornton, Cisco, Mrs. Mary Collins, Kirkland, Mrs. Evia McDonald, Mrs. Ethell Lindopp and Mrs. Maude Hamilton of Childress. Pallbearers will be Charles L. Kee, Robert L. Evans Jr., Morgan Martin, Oscar Nabors, L.D. Mundt, Leslie Ross, T.W. Alderson, Sherman Smith. (Dick) Sides, 52, of Big Spring, will be held Friday. Time of services will be announced by Nalley Funeral Home. Mr. Sides, a painter and paper hanger, was struck by lightning about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday while on a fishing trip to Tiburcios, Mexico, near Presidio. Mrs. Sides was visiting in El Paso when notified of her husband's death. She was en route to Big Spring Wednesday night. Word of Mr. Sides death reached here Wednesday. A telephone report said he died during a storm. With Abilene Man He was traveling with John Tidwell of Abilene and James W. Johnson of Big Spring. The trio had been gone since Saturday. When the storm became violent, the fishermen decided to leave their tent for the pick-up truck parked nearby. Mr. Sides was the first to leave the tent. A bolt of lightning struck him and a tree. The tree fell on him. Johnson and Tidwell, in the tent when the lightning struck, were unhurt. The streams were on a rise and the two survivors had difficulty in getting Mr. Sides body to Coyame, Mex. They radioed a funeral home in Marfa to meet them at Ojinaga, Mex. The flew to Ojinaga and the body was taken to Marfa. A Nalley Funeral Home coach returned the body to Big Spring Wednesday. Mr. Sides is survived by his wife and son, Wilbur W. Sides of Big Spring; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Sides of Kirkland, and two brothers and six sisters. He had lived here since 1927.
