Cherokee Daily Times: Dec. 21,1883: pg 3 Gertrude B. Messerole, 86, Cherokee died Dec. 19, in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital,following a lengthy illness. She had been a resident of Cherokee County her entire life. Services will be held Dec. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cherokee. Rev. James Smith and Rev. Dale George will officiate. Burial will be in the Maryhill Visitation Church Cemetery. A scripture service will be held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Greenwood Funeral Home. She was born July 5,1907 in Cherokee to William and Gertrude (Schmitz) Pitts. She attended school at Maryhill. On June 15,1936 she married Gordan Messerole at Maryhill. He preceded her in death January 7,1983. They farmed in Rock Township for many years before moving to Cherokee in 1961. Survivors include three sons, Robert, and his wife, Sheryl; Ron (Tiny), and his wife Gayle, all of Cherokee; Roy, and his wife, Mary Margaret, of LeMars; two daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Selk, and her husband, Tom, of Larrabee; Mrs. Joyce Bechtel, and her husband, Michael, of Cherokee; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Messerole, of Cherokee; one brother,Melvin Pitts, of Cleghorn; one sister, Mrs. Katherine George, of Storm Lake, sister-in-law, Alice Pitts, of Cleghorn; brother-in-law, Bob Rahn, of Cherokee; 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son Jesse in 1987, brothers Alvin, Joe and William (Wid) Pitts; sisters, Mary Leonard, Helen Rahn and Rose Zimmer.
