Cherokee Daily Times: Oct. 11, 1989: pg 2 Mrs. Mary E. (Mae) Leonard, 90, died Monday, Oct. 9, at the Cherokee Villa, following a lengthy illness. She had previously resided at 721 N. Roosevelt St., Cherokee. Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cherokee. The Rev. Dale George will officiate. Burial will be in the Maryhill Visitation Cemetery. A rosary will be recited Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Leonard, the former Mary E. Pitts, was born Feb. 11,1899, in Cherokee to Mr. and Mrs. William G. Pitts. On Aug. 30, 1932, she married Charles R. Leonard in the Visitation Catholic Church, Maryhill, rural Cherokee. They lived in Waterloo from 1932 to 1961, returning to Cherokee in 1961. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cherokee. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Bud (Alice) Hall of Omaha, Neb.; one brother, Melvin Pitts, Cleghorn; three sisters, Gertrude Messerole and Mrs. Robert (Helen) Rahn, both Cherokee, and Kathryn George, Storm Lake; eight grandchildren; two stepgranddaughters and one greatgranddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1964, her parents, one son Bill in 1970, three brothers and one sister.
