Roy “Red” Messerole, 80, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at All Saints Parish – St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be after 4:00 p.m. Monday, January 15, 2018 at the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. There will be a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5:00 p.m. followed by a 4th Degree Chalice Service. There will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at the funeral home. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Memorials can be made in Red’s name to the Le Mars Community School District Foundation and/or All Saints Parish in Le Mars. Roy John Messerole was born November 1, 1937 in Cherokee, Iowa, the son of Gordon and Gertrude (Pitts) Messerole. He was baptized and confirmed at Maryhill Visitation Church, rural Cherokee, Iowa. He attended grade school at Maryhill and later high school at Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Cherokee. Following high school, he attended Westmar College in Le Mars where he received B.A. in Education. Red began his career in education as a teacher and coach in Akron, Bishop Heelan, and later Paullina. During this time, he furthered his education at the University of South Dakota where he received his Master’s degree in Education administration. He then became the principal in Wall Lake, Iowa and later in Alta, Iowa. Red received his Specialist’s degree from U.S.D. He then became superintendent for Crestland-Early and later BCL-Conrad school district. In 1985, he became the superintendent for Le Mars Community School District. While serving in Le Mars, he was instrumental in establishing the Le Mars Community School District Foundation. Red retired from Le Mars Community in 2000. The following year, he served as interim superintendent for Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn School district. After officially retiring, Red taught driver’s education for South O’Brien School District for several years and supervised student teachers for Buena Vista University. Red was united in marriage to Mary Rupp on June 1, 1963 at Maryhill Visitation Church. To this union, 4 children were born: Mike, Bill, Tom, and Suzy. Red was a member of All Saints Parish in Le Mars and 4th Degree Member of the Michael J. McGivney Council #3088 of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Lion’s Club in Le Mars where he had served as president. He was also a member of the Le Mars Area Chamber of Commerce where he received the distinguished honor of being awarded the “Citizen of the Year” in 1997. While serving as superintendent, he was awarded “Superintendent of the Year” from the Area Education Association. Red loved watching all students participate in their activities. He enjoyed attending the Drake Relays in Des Moines for many years. In his younger years, Red was a basketball official and baseball umpire. Through the years, he enjoyed golfing and watching the Minnesota Vikings. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of over 54 years, Mary of Le Mars; a son: Mike Messerole (Julie) of Omaha, NE, and their children, Anna and Adam; a son: Bill Messerole (Devon) of Creston, IA; a son: Tom Messerole (Darby) of Pomeroy, IA, and their children, Sylvia Messerole (Max Dreher), Mercedes (Mark) Torres and their daughter Raven, Jaxon, Hunter, Hawkeye, and Georgia; a daughter: Suzy Messerole (Dianne Berg) of Minneapolis, MN, and their daughter, Solvei; two sisters: Gertrude Selk of Cherokee, IA, and Joyce (Mike) Bechtel of Cherokee, IA; a sister in law: Elaine Messerole of Cherokee, IA; two brothers-in- law: Royden (Della) Rupp of Cherokee, IA, and Dale (Peg) Rupp of Des Moines, IA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Gertrude Messerole; 3 brothers: Bob, Jesse, and Tiny; 3 sisters-in-law: Gayle Messerole, Sheryl Messerole, and Elaine Rupp; and a brother in law: Tom Selk.
