Bio

CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Robert W. Messerole, 72, of Cherokee died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center. Services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Burial was in the Maryhill Visitation Cemetery, in rural Cherokee. Robert W. Messerole, the son of Gordon and Gertrude (Pitts) Messerole, was born Dec. 17, 1936, in Cherokee. His childhood years were spent on a farm near Cleghorn, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Maryhill and Immaculate Conception High School in 1955. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Germany. On June 18, 1960, Bob was united in marriage to Sheryl Pettengill. They lived in Cherokee and he worked for Wilson Foods Inc., for more than 30 years before retiring. Following retirement, they moved to Osage Beach, Mo., for several years before moving to Sergeant Bluff to be closer to family. In his spare time Bob enjoyed fishing and Iowa Hawkeyes football, but most of all he enjoyed being around his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. He is survived by two sons, Joel Messerole of South Carolina, and Noel (Amy) Messerole of Virginia; two daughters, Jonna Galvin of Sergeant Bluff and Missy Schmitz of Sergeant Bluff; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Red (Mary) Messerole of Le Mars, Iowa; two sisters, Gert (Tom) Selk of Larrabee, Iowa, and Joyce (Mike) Bechtel of Cherokee; sisters-in-law, Elaine Messerole of Cherokee and Gayle Messerole of Spirit Lake, Iowa; as well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sheryl Messerole on April 27, 2009; his parents, Gordon and Gertrude Messerole; two brothers, Jesse and Tiny Messerole; and his father and mother-in-law, Faye and Ora Pettengill.
