Bio

Cherokee Daily Times: Sept. 9, 1967: pg 6 Alvin J. Pitts, 65, died Friday night following a nine month illness. He lived at 718 West Main Street. He was born Dec. 21, 1901 in Cherokee County to William and Gertrude Schmitz Pitts. On Jan. 8, 1923, he married Mary Linneman at the Visitation Church at Maryhill. She preceded him in death March 11, 1942. He married Bessie Novak at Early, Ia, Nov. 10, 1952. He was a lifelong farmer and farmed in Elk Township, Buena Vista County, until he retired. Survivors are: his wife, Bessie, Cherokee; four daughters, Mrs. Bernard (Imelda) McDermott, Storm Lake; Mrs. Lawrence (Shirley) Kennedy, Denison; Mrs. Ervin (Rosemary) Westphal, Aurelia and Mrs. Don (Marlys) Alldredge, Colby, Kan. Two sons: William, Pocahontas and James, Alta. One stepson, Victor Novak, Toledo, Ia and two step-daughters, Mrs. Edward (Dorothy) Rosburg, Kremmling, Colo, and Mrs. Allen (Elaine) Rosburg, Lincoln, Neb. Five sisters: Mrs. Ray Leonard, Mrs. Gordon Messerole and Mrs. Robert Rahn, Cherokee, Mrs. Rose Zimmer, and Mrs Leonard George, Storm Lake. Three brothers also survive: William Pitts, Cherokee, Joseph, and Melvin Pitts, Cleghorn. There are also 43 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a. m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church, Cherokee. Father Robert Dougherty will be the celebrant of the Requiem High Mass. Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery at Maryhill. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p. m. Sunday in the Green wood Funeral Home.
