John Stephen Chesnutt was born 5 May 1875 in Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee, USA. He was 3rd of the four children born to Dr. James Henry Chesnutt (1843-1908) and Sarah Sopshire [Phillips] Chesnutt (1845-1918). Siblings: Mary Ella [Chesnutt] Fuqua (1866-1942), Hugh Edward Chesnutt (1868-1923) and Maude Emma [Chesnutt] Norman (1880-1947). By the time John reached adulthood, he was of medium height and stout build. His eyes were blue and his hair was brown. At the age of 25 years he married Bettie Fletcher (1879-1966) on the evening of 3 January 1901 at the bride's home near Ennis, Ellis, Texas. They are the parents of Margaret Ann [Chesnutt] Bagby (1910-1970). The family made their home at 1504 Van Buren Street in Amarillo, Potter, Texas. John found employment as a bank cashier at the 1st National Bank in Amarillo where he later became the Vice-President of the bank. In 1944, he and Bettie moved to Austin, Texas where John worked as a financial inspector for the Railroad Commission until his retirement. In 1950 John Stephen suffered a stroke and then 2 years later he passed away of Cardiac Failure in the Seton Hospital on 23 April 1952 in Austin, Travis, Texas. He was 12 days shy of his 77th birthday. He was laid to rest in the Austin Memorial Park Cemetery in Austin, Travis, Texas.
