Bio

Braten/Braden was the oldest of the 10 known children of William Thomas Jernigan II and Lucy Tarver. He was born in North Carolina and moved as a child to Robertson County TN with his parents and paternal grandparents. His father had fought in the War of 1812, and his paternal grandfather had fought in the Revolutionary War. The Jernigan extended clan moved to Robertson County shortly after the War of 1812 and are found on the 1820 census there. Braten marries Mary Ghoulson [Cole Jones?] in TN and the couple is shown on family trees as having at least 12 children. Ten of Braten's children survive or leave their own children to inherit Braten's 1/9th share of the estate of their uncle William T Jerningan III. See the names receiving 1/90th of the estate (1/9th x 10) at "Robertson, Tennessee, United States records," images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C39N-XSDW-C?view=fullText : May 18, 2025), image 435 of 967; .
