James A Jernigan was the 5th child of the 10 born to William Thomas Jernigan II and Lucy Tarver, and the first of their children to be born in TN. On the 1860 census James is a farmer with real estate value $6225 and personal estate value $16205. He is on the 1860 slave schedule owning 11 slaves. James left a will dated 6 Aug 1899 that bequeathed everything to his beloved wife Debby for her life, then to his heirs that survive her equally. Executors were his sons Andrew J and J P Jernigan. [ Note: His oldest son Albert Jefferson Jernigan had already moved to Texas, and would commit suicide there before his mother's death.] James' will was submitted to probate November term 1890 Robertson County TN.
