Bio

Martha was the 8th of the 10 children born to William Thomas Jernigan II and Lucy Tarver, and the first of their children to pass away. She is born and lives her entire life in Robertson County TN. Her mother dies when Martha is 22. Martha marries 10 years later to William H Riggan 10 Jan 1855, but dies after one year, leaving one child, a daughter also named Martha. The daughter receives her deceased mother's 1/9th share of the estate of William T Jernigan III, a maternal uncle who died 1878. This Martha age 26 is listed on the 1850 Robertson County TN census, living with her widowed father William age 75 (farmer, property value $2000) and three unmarried adult brothers William 38 (tobacco trader), Sterling Brown 23 and Washington T 21. Martha marries William H Rigan 10 Jan 1855 in Robertson County. On the 1860 census their daughter Martha Rigen age 4 is living with a maternal uncle, Braten Jernigan. She has not been traced after that, aside from receiving a distributive share ($714.20) of the uncle's estate settlement in 1880. It is possible Martha's daughter Martha Ragan dies without marrying or having children. Her father William H Riggen is found on later census records living in another county with his mother and grown sibling. His will dated 1899 and probated 1905 in Giles County TN does not mention any children and leaves his estate to a sibling.
