William III was the grandson of William Thomas Jernigan who fought in the American Revolution, and the son of the William Thomas Jernigan II who fought in the War of 1812. He is buried in the same Jernigan Family Cemetery as his namesakes. They were all born in North Carolina. Three generations of the Jernigan family will remove to Robertson County TN when this William III is a child. William III was the 4th of his parents' 10 children. He dies intestate, leaving a large estate but no wife or children. His heirs-at-law are his siblings, or if a sibling predeceased him, the siblings' children/grandchildren. By the time William III passes away, only 4 of his siblings are still living (Celia Fields, James A, Tevis Washington, Sterling Brown). William's nephews Elisha Tarver Jernigan Jr and Alexander Green Jernigan (son of Braden/Braton jernigan) are the estate administrators. The administrators file a suit "Jernigan et al vs Jernigan et al" in the Robertson County court to finalize the estate. The court file is lengthy, with different Powers of Attorneys filed by the different branches of the family and a guardian appointed to represent all the minor heirs-at-law, William is shown living with his father on the 1850 and 1860 census, with his own property and occupation tobacco trader. He is on the slave schedule in 1860. After his father's death and the Civil War, he is found on the 1870 census living next to his brother Tevis Washington Jernigan, listed as widower.
