Bio

There are three generations of "William Jernigans" buried in this cemetery, all born in North Carolina but removed as a family to settle in Robertson County TN about 1814. This memorial is for the William II, who fought in the War of 1812. His father "I" fought in the Revolutionary War. His son "III" carried on the family plantation and tobacco business but died without a wife or children. However his grandparents, parents, and brothers had large families and many Jernigan descendants still live in the area known as Jernigan town. This William Jernigan II marries Lucy Tarver in North Carolina and they start their family there. After the War of 1812 they and William's parents and at least one brother remove to Robertson County TN Lucy and William have 10 surviving children, the first four born in NC and the remaining born after the move to TN. The Jernigans are landowners and slave owners and tobacco traders, and the area where they settled is still known as Jernigan Town. This William is found on Robertson County TN census records in 1820, 1830, and 1840, and appears on the tax records as early as 1836. His wife Lucy dies in 1844, and William is found on the 1850 and 1860 census records living with some of his unmarried adult children, including the son named after him William III.
