Bio

He was the son of Thomas & Sylvia (Breeding) Hurst. He, with his parents, moved to Claiborne County, Tennessee in 1806 and settled in the Big Spring (now Springdale) area. He married, about 1820, Loraine "Raney" Harper. They attended the Big Spring Primitive Bapitist Church, which was the center of their social life. (click on picture to read caption) In 1841 they and several other families from the area made the journey to Missouri. They built crude houseboats, which they hauled to the upper reaches of the Cumberland River. They floated down to the Mississippi River. Here they boarded steamers and went up the Mississippi and Missouri rivers as far as Buchanan County, Missouri. They lived and farmed in Crawford Twp. near the town of Wallace. Charles was the father of 13 known children, twelve girls and one boy; Samantha, Louisa, Elizabeth, Mary K., Fetney, Rachel, Barbara, Sidney, Huldah, Margaret, Wiley, Emiline and Sarah.
