He was the son of Thomas and Sylvia (Breeding) Hurst. In his youth he migrated, with his family, down the river into Tennessee. On 10 Mar 1810 he married Mary Thompson in Grainger County. He was a farmer and in 1841 became an ordained Baptist Minister. Following in his fathers foot steps, he preached for a time (1846-1858) at the Big Spring Primitive Baptist Church.
