He was the son of Thomas and Sylvia (Breeding) Hurst. He migrated with his parents to Claiborne County, Tennessee. They settled in the Big Spring area and here he married, 1827, to Elizabeth Simmons. He was a farmer growing corn to feed the family and the livestock. A few acres of tobacco was raised as a cash crop. In 1850 he owned one male slave. He was the father of nine known children; 1.
