Grand Island Independent Monday July 13, 1953 Pg. 9 LONGTIME RESIDENT DIES HERE John M. Roach a resident of Grand Island for the last 43 years, died this morning in a local hospital. He had been in ill health for many years and had been critically ill the last three months. The family home is at 213 North Darr. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral home. The Rev. Alan Justad, pastor of the Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island Cem. Mr. Roach, a son of John and Sarah Roach was born March 6, 1881 at Corning, Iowa. He received an education there. As a young man he moved to Sargent, Neb., community and engaged in farming. He and Miss Ocia G. Hohman were married Oct. 15, 1909 at Loup City. Mr. and Mrs. Roach began their home on the farm near Sargent. Shortly afterwards they moved into Sargent, where Mr. Roach engaged in construction work. In October 1910 they came to Grand Island to establish their permanent residence. For six years Mr. Roach was employed by the Central Power Company in the gas division. Then he engaged in construction work until his health began to fail 12 years ago. He has been unable to work since that time. Mr. Roach is survived by his wife, eight children Floyd Roach, Mrs. Francis VanGordan, Mrs. Opal Gillham, Lester J. Roach and Ross E. Roach, all of Grand Island, Hugh Roach, Inglewood, Calif., Mrs. Jim Waldel, Chicao, Ill., and Mrs. Melvin Schild, Ft. Worth, Tex; one brother, Homer Roach, Corning, Iowa; one sister Mrs. Fred Leibert, Sargent, 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Fred, James and Clyde Roach; one sister Mrs. George Leibert; and three grandchildren. Friends may call from 7 to 9 o'clock Wednesday evening at the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Grand Island Independent Friday July 17, 1953 ROACH SERVICES ARE CONDUCTED THURSDAY Funeral services for John M. Roach were conducted Thursday afternoon in the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral home by the Rev. Alan Justad, pastor of the Methodist Church. Miss Gloria Gaf sang 'In the Garden' and 'Abide with me'. Mrs. S.T. Eckert played the accompaniment and the organ prelude and recessional. Pallbearers were George Richter, Raymond McComb, Raymond Roark, Earl Schmidt, Arthue Leisinger and Lloyd Leamons. Burial was in Grand Island Cem. Present from out of the city were Ada Clanton and son, Lee Clanton, Columbus; Mrs. Jim Petersen and Mrs. Glenn Andersen and son, Kenneth Andersen, Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Homer Roach and Clifford Roach, Corning, Ia; Sgt. and Mrs. Melvin Schild and children, Ft. Worth, Tex; Mr, and Mrs. John Wadel, Chicago, Ill; Hugh Roach, Inglewood, Calif., Donald and Howard Leibert, Sargent; Mr. and Mrs. Jess Hohman, and daughter and Mrs. Melvin Reckling, Ansley; Woodrof and Fred Packers, Burwell; and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Roach, Doniphan
