Grand Island Independent Sunday March 12, 2000 Lester J. Roach, 80, of Grand Island died Friday, March 10, 2000, at Grand Island Veterans Home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grand Island City Cem. The Rev. Tom Ryan will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family. Mr. Roach was born July 10, 1919, to John and Ocia (Homan) Roach in Hall County. He grew up and attended school in Grand Island. After his education, he worked with the Work Projects Administration and later for Safeway Stores. He entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 19, 1941, serving until Oct. 18, 1945. He married Dorothy M. Grudzinski on Nov. 24, 1949. He worked for Kiewit Construction for four years after the service. He then worked in the sheet metal trade for McElroy Service Co., McCormick Inc. in York and then with Jerry's Sheet Metal until he retired. Mrs. Roach died in 1996. He moved to Grand Island Veterans Home in October 1999. Survivors include three daughters, Cynthia Hess of Fort Wayne, Ind., Catherine Davis of Farmington, Ark., and Christi Paulson of Palmyra; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Ross of Westminster, Colo.; and two sisters, Betty Wadell of Chicago and Delores Schields of Aurora, Colo. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Hugh and two sisters, Vera Van Gordon and Opal Williams.
