Bio

For the purposes of this memorial, I have used the date of birth on Edith's gravestone. However, her obituary, which I have transcribed below, gave her birth date as June 20, 1876. I checked her death record at the Wapello County Court House, and it also gave her date of birth as June 20, 1876. Since there are no birth records for the 1870s, I have no way of verifying for sure which is correct, as I have seen mistakes on gravestones, in obituaries, and even in the death records. Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” December 14, 1949: MRS. PRESTON SKINNER Mrs. Edith M. Skinner, 73, wife of Preston Skinner, died at the home 602 Summitt street, Tuesday at 5:10 p.m. She was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Gault, born in Corning, Iowa, June 20, 1876. She had been a resident here for the past 47 years. She is survived by her husband, Preston, a son, Claude of Ottumwa, and two daughters, Mrs. Grace Lumsdon of Ottumwa and Mrs. Pansy Elliott of Ottumwa. Also surviving are a brother, Steve Gault of Davenport, 12 grandchildren, three half-sisters who are Mrs. Stella Bryant and Mrs. Alice Buster of Des Moines and Mrs. Clara Velkelvurg of Benton, Ark., and three half-brothers, Edgar Gault, Des Moines, Chester Gault, Indianola, and Jessie Gault, Des Moines. Her parents and two grandchildren preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Johnson funeral chapel, in charge of the Rev. W.B. Friend of the Pentecostal church. Burial will be in the Shaul cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ernest Hanna, Max Lumsdon, Robert and John Elliott, Marion Eugene Skinner, and William Garmon.
