John Patek, Sr. was born on Dec. 26, 1869 in Netolice, Czech. to Jakub Patek and Marie "Mary" Vackar Patek. He was their third child. His 10 siblings included: 2 older children who died young in Czech., James G. Patek, Theresa Patek (Mertlik), Mary Patek (Velek), Barbara Patek (Siegel), Anna Patek, Anastasia Patek (Kurtz), Ludmila Patek (Horkey), Jacob J. Patek. The Patek family came to America landing at Galveston in September 1890. They continued their journey inland and settled in the Moulton-Flatonia area. Later they moved to the Shiner community. On Oct. 24, 1893 John married Veronika Mauric at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner, TX. To this union were born 6 children: John Patek, Jr. (b. 9-17-1894, d. 3-9-1943) James Joseph "Jim" Patek (b. 9-17-1896, d. 4-19-1955) Charles Patek, Sr. (b. 9-12-1898, d. 10-6-1981) Vladik "Laddie" Patek (b. 3-22-1902, d. 3-9-1963) Jerome Frank Patek (b. 8-28-1904, d. 7-30-1972) Joseph Thomas "Joe" Patek (b. 9-14-1907, d. 10-24-1987) John passed away at the home of his son, Joe, on June 6, 1953 at the age of 83. ------------------------------ John Patek Sr. was a founding member of the Patek Orchestra, 1910. Later, in the mid 1940s, the band members changed to John, along with 5 of his 6 sons (and Chas Veit), who comprised the Joe Patek Orchestra. The band performed every weekend throughout Texas, on the radio with an hour long program, and produced records. One of their best known recordings was "The Shiner Song", which became the unofficial Texas-Czech anthem. In 1995 it received special recognition from the Texas Polka Music Association as an "all time favorite song." One of the Patek's most successful records was the "Beer Barrel Polka", which sold more than a million copies. The Joe Patek Orchestra retired after playing its last performance at the Firemen's Annual New Year's Eve Dance on Decemeber 31, 1982 at the American Legion Hall in Shiner. The last song played was "The Shiner Song".
