Bio
Mrs. Albert Mertlik, nee Theresa Patek, of Los Angeles, California, died Friday, August 4, 1972, at the age of 99 years, 10 months and 22 days. In just a few short weeks she would have reached the century mark. Her son, Emil Mertlik, of Fresno, California, called last week to inform the Gazette of her death, funeral services and burial which was held Monday, August 7 in Los Angeles. Mrs. Mertlik, one of eight children, was born September 12, 1872 in Netolice, Czechoslovakia, daughter of Jakub and Maria (Vackar) Patek. In her 18th year, the Patek family came to America landing at Galveston in September 1890. They continued their journey inland and settled in the Moulton-Flatonia area. Later they moved to the Shiner community. In 1892 she was married to Albert Mertlik. The couple made their home on a farm near Shiner. Their residence in Shiner was interrupted for two years when they lived in Oklahoma. In 1912 they moved to Westhoff and three years later, in November 1915, they moved to California. They were the parents of six children. Her husband died May 30, 1949 and a son, Jim, died in early childhood. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Theresia Davidson of Santa Monica, Calif., Miss Anastasia Mertlik of Los Angeles, Calif.; three sons, Adolph and Albert J. Mertlik of Los Angeles, Calif., Emil Mertlik of Fresno, Calif.; four grandchildren, Mrs. Donna Hewlett, Robert and Emil Mertlik Jr. of Fresno, James Mertlik of Lincoln, Nebraska; and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mertlik was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her husband and son, she was preceded in death by her father, August 23, 1906; her mother, in 1936; three brothers, John Patek Sr., June 3, 1953, James Patek, June, 1940; Jacob J. Patek, June 3. 1952; four sisters, Mrs. Emil (Ludmila) Horky, August 25, 1939; Mrs. Jacob (Mary) Velek, who was later married to Andrew Damek, March 28, 1946; Mrs. Joe (Anastasia) Kurtz Jr., January 10, 1966; Mrs. Joe (Barbara) Siegel Sr., December 23, 1966.
