Bio

'Aunt Katie' as my grandfather called her, was one of twenty-something Pringles that set out from Old Wire Road near Old Whynot village, in Lauderdale Co. MS migrating to Texas after the end of the Civil War. Their large plantation was gone, burnt to the ground and taken over by carpet baggers. Several relatives were already living in far north Limestone Co. TX., near Mustang Prairie and toward Marlin, Texas. They traveled by wagon, cart & horseback as far as East Texas, when several of them contracted some deathly illness. Her parents and many of her siblings died, leaving eight or nine to make their way to Limestone Co. All of the young children were cared for by some relatives & family friends, until the children grew up, married and started their own families. Aunt Katie cared for her youngest sister Lela by her living with Katie & her husband William. Sarah Katherine 'Katie' Pringle married William Thomas Buttrill on 12 July 1876 in Grosbeck, the county seat and had nine children, with five living into adulthood. Husband William died leaving her a widow in 1896. Aunt Katie never remarried. Katie lived around Grosbeck until 1920, when she lived with her daughter Eunice, who was a single mother in Dallas, TX and in 1930 she lived with another daughter Minnie, who was also a single mother in Limestone Co. Then, in her last years, she lived with her remaining son 'Bud' in St. Louis, MO, dying and being buried there. It took several years for her descendants to retrace her last years and locate her burial in an unmarked St. Louis grave, who was provided by her remaining son, who worked for the cemetery as a maintenance grounds keeper. Aunt Katie was a great country lady named after her great aunt, Suzannah Catherine Pringle Gardner of Chesterfield Co., SC. and Liberty Hill, GA.
