Bio

Joseph Cocek, Sr., Succumbs After Long Illness Joseph Cocek, Sr., 64, passed away at his home at 5:50 o'clock Sunday morning, January 14, after an illness of almost fifteen years. His condition grew steadily worse until he was confined to bed for the past thirty days. Funeral services were held at his home at 10:30 o'clock and at the Catholic Church at 11:00 o'clock Tuesday morning with the Rev. E.J. Polcak officiating. Interment was at the Catholic Cemetery near West. Surviving besides his wife are his five daughters, three sons, three brothers, one sister, and 6 grandchildren. The children are Mrs. A.B. Ctvrtlik of Waco, Mrs. Jesse Phife of Houston, Mrs. R.A. Urbanovsky of Fayetteville, Mrs. G.L. Borgeson of Dallas, Miss Leona Cocek of West, Joe Cocek, Jr. of Los Angeles, California, Alfonse Cocek of West, and W.E. Cocek who is a prisoner of war of the German government. The sister and brothers are Mrs. Frances Merenda of West, Frank Cocek, Sr. of West, Anton Cocek of Waco, and Louis Cocek of Houston. Pallbearers were: Hugo Freund, Robert Cervenka, John A. Sulak, Albert Milberger, Joe R. Mazanec and Fred Vana. Mr. Cocek came to this country with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cocek, from Czechoslovakia about 63 years ago when he was fifteen months old. After living in Fayette County for about two years, they moved to West where they have resided ever since. Mr. Cocek lived on the farm with his parents until he was about 26 years of age and then opened an ice business in this town. He then went to work as a bartender for the Popp Brothers and since the prohibition (seventeen years) worked as a clerk for Hruska's Grocery. On January 30, 1906, Mr. Cocek married Miss Julia Gerik, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gerik, in the local Catholic Church.
