Bio

William E. Cocek, age 73, of West passed away January 6, 1995, at his residence. A rosary was recited January 9 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption by Rev. Melvin Dornak. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated January 9 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with Rev. Melvin Dornak as Celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery near West. Mr. Cocek was born September 20, 1921, in West. He was the son of Joseph and Julia Cocek. He attended West schools and graduated from West High School in 1938. He then entered the National Guard and served in the United States Army during World War II with the 36th Division Medical Detachment. He was captured by the German troops and was a prisoner of war held in North Africa for two years. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He then received a Bachelor of Arts degree from East Texas State University in 1951. He lived in Dallas for the next several years working for Gulf Oil Company and Chrysler Automotive before moving to California. While in California, he owned several service stations in the San Mateo area. He also attended the University of San Francisco during this time. He then became a postal clerk for the United States Post Office in the early 1960's in San Mateo until he retired in 1982. At that time he returned to West. He was survived by two sisters, Olga Phife of Dallas and Lillian Borgeson of Brownsboro, and twelve nieces and nephews. Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements.
