Charles J. Smaistrla, 77, of West, a retired A&P grocery store manager, died Saturday night, September 22, 1979 in a Fort Worth hospital. Rosary was recited Sunday night at Kotch Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Rev. Gene Shepard as celebrant. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Mr. Smaistrla was a lifelong West resident and married Helen Wernet in 1924. She died in 1977. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, KJT Society No. 11, SPJST Lodge No. 54 and the West Volunteer Fire Department. He was also an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus No. 2305 and a charter member of West Kiwanis Club. Survivors include one son, Dr. Charles Smaistrla of Arlington; two daughters, Mrs. JoAnn Gerik of West and Mrs. George (Joyce) Kostohryz of Fort Worth; one sister, Mrs. Tom (Wilma) Scanio of Waco; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were: David Moon, Jake Tucker, Ben Sulak, Freddie Gerik, M.F. Kruse, Jimmy Parker, Charlie Wingate and Bill Cathey.
