Mrs. Smajstrla was born the fourth child to Vaclav and Rosie Soukup Mashek in the Leslie Community near Brenham March 28, 1874. The family moved to West when she was three, and one of the first three Czech families to settle here. Granny Smajstrla often told of how she walked miles from West to school at Tours through waist-high grass. She was married to Chas. W. Smajstrla a West farmer and businessman. He died in 1927. They had four sons and four daughters. The oldest daughter died at infancy. Mrs. Smajstrla owned the West Drug Store for 20 years before selling her interest three years ago. She was a charter member of West Catholic Daughters of America, KJZT Society, Altar Society and Rosary Society of the Church of the Assumption. The West News Friday, July 1, 1955
