Mrs. Charles Smaistrla Age 74, Dies in Waco Mrs. Charles J. "Helen" Smaistrla, 74, died Thursday night, November 3, 1977 in a Waco hospital. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 5th at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West, with the Rev. George Doskocil as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Rosary was recited at Kotch Funeral Home Chapel in West. Mrs. Smaistrla was born in St. Joe, Tenn. She married Charles Smaistrla August 14, 1924, in Waco. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a charter member and past grand regent of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court 829. She was a member of KJZT Society No. 11 and SPJST Lodge No. 54. She worked with her husband in managing the A&P Food Store in West about 45 years. She was a member of West Community Hospital Auxiliary and West Rest Haven Auxiliary. She was on the board of directors of West Welfare, a community program. Survivors include her husband; a son, Dr. Charles Smaistrla of Arlington; two daughters, Mrs. JoAnn Gerik of West and Mrs. George "Joyce" Kostohryz of Fort Worth; a brother, Louis J. Wernet, Sr. of West; three sisters, Mrs. Marvin "Josephine" Mikeska of Longview, Mrs. Joseph "Catherine" Morris of California and Mrs. Roderick "Mary" Mitchell of Waco; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Charlie Kubacak, Dr. Garl Halm, Jesse Devers, Louis Nemec, Sr., Marvin Mikeska, Freddie Gerik, James Parker and Thomas Scanio, Jr. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 87, No. 45, Edition 1, Thursday, November 10, 1977, page 5.
