Bio
Jo Ann Gerik, age 73 of West, passed away early Thursday afternoon, Oct. 14, 1999 at her residence. Rosary was recited 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with the Mass of Christian Burial following at 10:15 with the Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery. Mrs. Gerik was born June 29, 1926 in West, the daughter of Charles and Helen Smajstrla. She attended West schools and graduated from West High School in 1943. She married John Lee Gerik on Aug. 20, 1946 in West. He preceded her in death on April 12, 1958. She was a housewife and homemaker. She was a member of the Tuesday Night Bridge Club, Catholic Daughters of America Court #829, KJZT Society #11, a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption and a member of the McLennan/Hill County Czech Heritage Society. She was preceded in death by a grandson, John Lee Gerik, III who died in 1977. She is survived by four sons, John Lee Gerik, Jr. and his wife, Ruth of Arlington, Thomas Charles Gerik and his wife, Carolyn of Robinson, Phillip James Gerik and his wife, Cathy of West and Michael Frank Gerik and his wife, Cyndi of Waco; one daughter, Karen Ann Bittner and her husband, Vern of Midlothian; one brother, Dr. Charles Smajstrla, Jr. and his wife, Jean of Arlington; one sister, Joyce Kostohryz and her husband, George of Ft. Worth; a brother-in-law, Freddy Gerik and his wife, Nita of West; ten grandchildren, Matthew Gerik, Joseph Gerik, Michael Bittner, Craig Daughtery, Chris Daughtery, Garrett Bittner, Christina Brock, Breana Bittner, Pam Gerik and Samantha Gerik and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Helen Smajstrla Needy Family Fund. Pallbearers were Matthew Gerik, Joseph Gerik, Michael Bittner, Craig Daughtery, Chris Daughtery, Jimmy Gerik and Garrett Bittner.
