Mrs. John (Leona) Nemecek, age 93 of West, passed away early Wednesday morning, December 10, 1997 at Hillcrest Medical Center at West. A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. December 11 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West by the Rev. Ed Karasek. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 3:15 p.m. December 11 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Melvin Dornak as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery near West. Mrs. Nemecek was born September 11, 1904 in LaGrange, the daughter of Joseph and Vlasta Polasek. She graduated from West High School in 1923. She attended Texas Women's University and Southwest Texas State University where she received her teacher's certificate. She married John Frank Nemecek on June 22, 1932 in West. He preceded her in death on July 26, 1985. She was a homemaker and worked as a school teacher at several area schools including Tours and St. Mary's School in West until she retired in the early 1970's. She continued to serve as a school librarian. She was a member of the West Senior Citizen Program, active in the American Lung Association, Parent Teachers Association, Catholic Daughters of America Court No. 829 where she was a member for over 50 years, National Council of Catholic Women, SPJST, We3st Longhorn Club where she formerly served as treasurer, West Fair and Rodeo Association and a West Community Hospital Volunteer and Ladies Auxiliary. She was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Cecile Greene of West; several in-laws, Christine Hruska, Adele Nemecek, Raymond and Lillian Nemecek, all of West; and a grandson, Cliff Greene of Palestine. In lieu of flowers or food, memorials may be made to the West Ambulance Association, West Library Association or to St. Mary's School Library.
