Adele (Smajstrla) Nemecek, 88, of West, passed away early Saturday evening, May 24, 2008 at West Rest Haven. A rosary will be recited and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Rev. Ed Karasek, Msgr. Emilian Foltyn, and Deacon Buddy Shieldes as celebrants. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Adele was born in Tours, Texas, to the late John and Mary (Petrs) Smajstrla. She attended school in Elk and graduated from Axtell High School in 1939. Adele worked for The Hugo Freund Co. in West as a bookkeeper and met the love of her life, Edward Nemecek. On June 10, 1940, they were united in marriage in West. She also worked for a dress shop in South Carolina while Eddie served in the U.S. Army. She then became a homemaker and mother. Adele was a member of Catholic Daughters of America Court #829 and was a camp counselor for the Jr. CDA. She also started the Catholic Youth Organization in West and attended many conventions and hosted dances. She was a member of the Iris Society; West Bluebell Garden Club, where she served as president; and the West Longhorn Club. Adele was a very faithful and active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption. She enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, flower arranging, embroidering, reading, working crossword puzzles, and was very active in the lives of her children. She enjoyed traveling and going to the horse races. Adele is preceded in death by her husband on September 20, 1993; a grandson, Kyle Hobbs: three brothers; and four sisters. Survivors include daughters, Sandra O'Connor, of Waco and Cindy Hobbs and husband, Bob, of West; sisters, Rosalee Urbis, of West, Evelyn Cunningham, of Elk, and Jonnie Lou Yowell and husband, Bill, of Killeen; brother-in-law, Raymond Nemecek, of West; grandchildren, Kelly O'Connor Elrick and husband, Sandy and Sean O'Connor and wife, Katie, all of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Scott Hobbs and wife, Lindsey, of West; great-grandchildren, Anderson, SoRelle, Colman, and Larkin O'Connor and Landra Hobbs; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
