Karazin (sic), Nuckolls Co., Neb. ==================== The Grand Island Independent (Grand Island, NE), Wednesday, May 11, 1988; pg. 11 Nebraska death Mary Skalka DEWEESE - Mary Hilda Skalka, 89, of Deweese, died Wednesday, May 11, at Nelson. Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Deweese. The Rev. Gary Gross will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. at McLaughlin Funeral Home in Clay Center. A rosary will be recited Thursday at 7:15 p.m. at the church. Mrs. Skalka was born June 24, 1899, in Nuckolls County, the daughter of Frank and Frantiska Mazour Karmazin. She attended Catholic schools in Lawrence. She married Albert Joseph Skalka on May 12, 1919. They farmed and raised cattle near Deweese, retiring in 1957. Mr. Skalka died March 26, 1978. She had lived at Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Nelson since 1982. She was a member of Our Lady of Assumption parish and altar society. Survivors include four sons, Stanley of Grand Island, Leo, Alfred and Ivan of Deweese; a daughter, Margart Nims of Long Beach, Calif.; a sister, Eva Bauers of Lincoln; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
